NISSAN'S REVOLUTIONARY DC QUICK CHARGERS LAND IN EUROPE
Rolle, Switzerland (April 5, 2012) - Nissan has today announced the arrival of the first of 400 free units of its revolutionary Direct Current (DC) Quick Charger, which will be installed at key locations across Europe. The 400 volt DC units allow charging of a Nissan LEAF, or other ChadeMo compliant electric vehicles, to 80% capacity in just 30 minutes. It has been developed by Nissan with a patented engineering breakthrough and is CE and TUV certified for all countries in Europe.
The new Nissan-designed Quick Chargers allow compliant electric vehicle owners to significantly extend their journeys to cover significantly larger distances. The Nissan chargers will be positioned at key transport points such as motorways services, airports and retail parks. Nissan is giving the units away to kick-start the creation of national charging networks, which will give greater mobility to electric vehicle customers.
This project will open a number of zero emission corridors such as the route from Paris to Amsterdam, which when finished will allow a Nissan LEAF owner to travel between the French capital and the largest city in the Netherlands with ease. These initial routes will be linked by chargers from Nissan's partner companies who have agreed to sell or manufacture the innovative new system under licence. These commercial partners will be installing thousands of chargers over the next two years, adding to the already radically expanding EV charging network.
The new units are 50% smaller and 50% less expensive (now starting below 10,000 Euro) than previous designs of Quick Charger, making them easier and more cost effective to install for commercial operators. The project to create the chargers is part of Nissan's proactive approach to the electric vehicle market, which seeks to make zero emissions motoring accessible to more European consumers.
As Paul Willcox, Nissan's Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing in Europe, confirmed: "This is a huge first step in the creation of a European quick charge network, which will open up electric vehicle ownership to many more people. We are creating an infrastructure which can be used by any ChadeMo compliant vehicle, not just Nissan LEAF owners. These chargers are also compatible with our Alliance partner Renault's AC 43kW fast charging system for future network expansion." He continued: "Our approach at Nissan is to overcome perceived barriers to the ownership of electric vehicles, rather than waiting for others to do it for us. We believe this holistic approach is essential for the continuing success of our electric vehicles programme in Europe."
About the Nissan LEAF:
The Nissan LEAF was the first mass produced EV winning the European, World and Japanese car of the year 2011. More than 25,000 units have been sold globally since its introduction in December 2010, making Nissan LEAF the world's most selling electric vehicle. The AC motor develops 80 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque, enough for a maximum speed of 145 km/h. The electric motor is powered by a Nissan-developed laminated lithium-ion battery with an output of more than 90 kW. Recharging from empty to 100% takes eight hours with a normal charger and just 30 minutes from empty to 80% using a quick charger in optimal conditions. Nissan LEAF has been awarded five stars in the tough Euro NCAP tests, making it one of the safest cars on the road. Nissan LEAF comes fully equipped with air conditioning, satellite navigation, rear-view parking camera. European production of the Nissan LEAF will start at Sunderland in early 2013.
